Cornish Rex Updates (1 Year Later)
We love to be able to keep in touch with our adopters, especially in special cases such as this where the staff put alot of time and love into particular animals. These are some updates we have received from some of our Cornish Rex adopters. (Read more about their story.) It makes all the time and effort worthwhile...
Addie (Adelle) and Amos
These two are brother and sister who were placed together in a great home in Ohio. They were born to Beatrice while in our care. These were the smallest kittens we've ever seen to survive, and now they are thriving! They found a new home with two children, two dogs, and two other cats. Here is a note from their new family:
Just wanted to update you on Addie and Amos. They are doing fantastic! Addie weighs about a pound and a half more than Amos. She is a lot more stand-offish than he is as well. They are best friends with Leo (the lab/rott mix) and have been caught sleeping in his crate, with him in it!
I have attached a couple of pictures for you. Hope you enjoy them. Hope all is well in Michigan!
Until later,
Addie and Amos and family
Belle
Belle was a sweet, quiet girl who was passed over by several families that came to choose their new compaion. She must have been waiting for just the right folks to come along because she has found the purrrfect home.
To Julie and Staff,
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You sooo much for the opportunity to adopt our wonderful little Belle (we now call her "Pickle" - ever since Julie was putting her in the carrier and said "in you go Pickle", she's been Pickle ever since). We were told that she was timid so she was one of the last to be picked but the minute she walked in our door, she thought she was the queen of the house. She has her own blankets to snuggle in and her favorite toys and even her special place in the window in the sun where she can watch the birds. She even tries to terrorize the older cat but they don't take her seriously and there is plenty of room in the house for everyone to have their own space. As you can see, she even has a little sweater she likes to wear now and then. We stopped at my vets on the way home and they said she is in excellent health, thanks to all your hard work. She is so much fun that we can't imagine our lives without her. Thanks again for everything you all do for the animals and especially for rescuing our Pickle so we can give her a good home. I think she's very happy here!
Your Friends,
Pickle and family
Betty
Betty was a bit shy, especially compared to her buddy, Beatrice. She found a fantastic home in Canada and is making it her own. Betty's new family is currently working on getting her another Cornish Rex for company as she has been very lonely as an only cat.
Hello, I just wanted to give everyone an update on Betty, our wonderful cornish rex that we adopted from you in November. She is doing very well with us and seems to have moved into a routine very quickly. She wakes us up every morning at our bedroom door with consistent crying until we get up and allow her to snuggle with us. She also does this after work until we sit down and snuggle. Fortunately, we love snuggling with her, but are seriously wondering whether she may be missing a companion. Anyway, other than what we are diagnosing as loneliness, all is well with our Betty. She is very friendly, very loving and loves basking in the sunlight in our apartment. She spends her evenings completely covered by a blanket (her favourite thing!)or running around chasing one of her favourite toys. Betty has brought a lot of joy to our lives and we really appreciate everything you did in helping these cats found loving homes.
Thanks again!

Bertha
Bertha was born to Momma (and Tommy) after she arrived at our shelter. She was about double the size of Amos and Adelle at birth, so was named Big Bertha. Bertha was a very cute little girl and has found a happy home. Bertha is now called "Moo".
Moo is a very handsome cat now, with the softest coat of any cat we have ever known. She has socialized very well with the family and has taken on the role of big sister to a second Cornish Rex that is now 6 months old. They get along very well.
Thanks,
Moo and family
Camilla
Camilla is the sister to Charlotte and Charlie. These fun loving guys were sought by many adopters and we tried to match them to the best home for them of our approved applicants. Unfortunately that left many unhappy potential adopters, but hopefully they can be happy for her, because Camilla sounds like she's got it made in her new home.
Julie - things are going very well. I renamed my kitten Zaela. She is a
dream come true! Zaela is doing so well. She's becoming a very sweet and cuddly kitty.
Yet she hasn't lost a bit of her kitten energy. She likes to race
across the room as fast as she can and run off the wall....literally!
Quite entertaining!
She loves everyone she meets - including dogs, cats and even two year
old children - when friends visit, she'll follow the kids around the
house for hours.
She loves doing house chores with me - once I start throwing clothes
into the laundry basket she hops in so she won't miss a ride to the
basement, then she plays in the basement while I start the washing
machine and as I unload the dryer she's right back into the basket for
me to carry her back upstairs.....after all this "work" she likes to
take a long cat nap in the laundry basket on top of the warm
clothes....oh the life of a cat.......
I've also learned it's almost impossible to make the bed while a cat
is running like crazy under the sheets every time they move.
She definitely makes house cleaning much more entertaining!
The picture I sent - I found Zae sleeping curled up on a pillow
with her long legs all stretched out. She woke up just as I took the
picture...then right back to sleep. I absolutely love her. Thank you for making such
a perfect match!!!
I can't even imagine what you guys went through to help these cornish
rexes. Again - I can't thank you enough for such an amazing new addition
to my family!!!!

Charlotte
Charlotte is the sister of Charlie and Camilla. She was a bit timid while with us but has blossomed in her new home. She is now called Molly.
Molly is doing great in her new home in Northern Kentucky. She is a very curious cat and has an amazing obsession with water. She is quite vocal when she wants something...like having the faucet turned on. She loves playing with her "brother" Avery, a cornish rex we had prior to adopting Molly. They get along very well. They snuggle together, play together, eat together and sleep together. She also likes to cuddle occasionally with her canine "sisters" Bella and Phoebe. She enjoys naps and computer time with her humans too. Enclosed are some pictures of Molly cuddling with her "siblings" and sitting at the computer with her "Dad". Thanks for choosing us to adopt Molly, she will live the rest of her life in luxury as a member of our Family.

Flora
Flora was a beautiful girl who handled the transition to the MCHS very well. Once she was settled in, however, she made it her job to hiss at any strangers in the building. This poor girl delivered six premature kittens that had been infected with Panleukopenia. None of them survived past their first week despite round the clock care and veterinary treatment. Flora tried her best, but motherhood was not to be this time. She was placed in a local home with two Siamese cats. The Siamese cats did not tolerate her and were making themselves sick from stress, so back she came. I had the perfect home waiting for her in lower Michigan, so soon she was off to that home where she plans to stay! She now owns a single woman with no other pets.
Julie, I wanted to thank you again for all the work you put into making
it possible to adopt my new member of the family. ( Flora).( I
renamed her Jasmine.) I picked her up from you dec.26, and she has been
a pleasure ever since. She greets me at the door when I get home, and
sits on my lap when ever I get a chance to sit down. She is a real
cuddly friend, and enjoys it as much as I do. She purrs very loud and
also 'talks' to me. She has brought so much to my life. She is
playful, and quite a clown to watch when she plays. Thanks again.

Freddy
Freddy was an older cat who came to us with almost no hair whatsoever. He was named "Frozen Freddy" after it became known that he had trouble maintaining his body temperature. While with us Freddy constantly wore a handsome red sweater and usually slept on a heating pad. This boy quickly won over anyone that met him. He found a doting new owner in California, which we thought was the perfect place to keep him warm! Freddy has been renamed Frankie and shares his new owner with Rosie, another Rex.
I notice we got a mention in your newsletter I received a few days ago. And you would be so pleased to see him -- he is FURRY! All over! He has cute little curls and waves, and no bald spots whatsoever. He came out sort of silver-gray except on shoulders and hips where he is dark gray, with some dark gray tiger stripes on his legs. He looks sort of like a very dark pointed gray. He still thinks he should sleep under the covers in my bed though -- even in the middle of the California summer when it is HOT here and he really no longer needs it. He also got a lot bigger, not in height of course but in weight. He almost has the beginnings of a little pot belly. Quite a change from the former "giraffe on stilts" look. He is very healthy, no medical problems whatsover. He remains incredibly loving and just a tiny bit timid. He and Rosie get along just fine, except of course when Rosie has to remind him that she is the Queen of the Universe. They act like an old married couple, they are always "fighting" and they sleep back to back but they are always together. They play tag, racing all over my bedroom and alternating who is chasing whom (usually when I am trying to sleep).
Every morning after I get up, we have special Frankie time, where I have to get down on the floor so he can walk all over me, roll around, purr like crazy, and knead holes in my body. If I don't get down on the floor quickly enough for his tastes, he stares at me and yowls. Every night when he is ready to turn in for the night, he finds a spot where he can sleep right next to my shoulder and curls up. Usually when I wake up in the morning, the first thing I see is beady Freddie eyes next to me, about an inch from my nose. I really don't think he moves away from me in the night.
I will send pictures shortly....

Gordon and Theresa
These two beauties were adopted into a devoted Cornish Rex home in Connecticut where they joined three other Rexes. They were the first of our Rex to fly to their new homes and they handled the trip like pros. Gordon and Theresa were two of the healthiest of our group and both very social. They have been renamed Mark (after Marquette) and Julie (after MCHS shelter manager).
As you will see, the cats are alert and healthy and their coat has filled in beautifully. If you look closely, you will notice that both of their tails have grown in a thick coat of hair. When I got them, their tails were bald from the stressful and unclean enviornment in there old home. They have really made such a marvelous improvement. They have made such a wonderful addition to our home; thank you once again.
Mark, Julie and family
Jefferson and Charlie
Jefferson was a quiet loving boy who had a lot of love to give. Charlie was the brother of Camilla and Charlotte. He was one of the biggest clowns in the group. We loved to take the three kittens together to the play room and let them run and be silly. This unlikely pair went together to a great new home in Indiana, but the family has since moved to Alabama! They share their new home with a French Bulldog and three young girls.
Thanks so much for all that everyone did for these cats. And for all that everyone there at the shelter does for all of the animals. Uther and Percival (were Jefferson and Charlie) are wonderful cats. They love each other very much. And we love them. I am with them all the time, and they act just like dogs. They like the shower and the sinks. And since Uther lost most all of his hair, he has been a permanent fixture in our bed, under the covers of course! But now he is getting his hair back. They have adjusted so well to everything. It just seems like they have been here forever. We are so fortunate to have these guys. And we feel like they are thankful to be here too. It was a match made in heaven for all involved.
God Bless You All!
Uther, Percival and family
Mia
Mia is the daughter of Momma and Tommy. She was a busy little girl while with us. Mia found a great new family that includes a dog and two other cats. Mia's new mom helped our shelter raise money for the care of these cats by donating a wonderful handmade quilt with cat patterns for the MCHS to raffle off. We raised over $700 with this fundraiser!
She is doing GREAT, She sleeps with us under our covers and Billie Jean now will play with her, But Patches loves her as they both love to play.
Again we want to Thank You for letting us to have Mia.

Momma and Tommy
These two lovebirds were living together, with their baby, Mia, before they came to us. We had to separate them, of course, to prevent further breeding, but alas we were too late. Momma had another kitten several weeks later. When Tommy was moved to another room, he escaped at any chance he could and would run back to his love and their baby. It was terribly sad. As soon as possible these two were spayed and neutered and reunited. They found a new loving home in Canada. They are now called George and Gracie.
Sorry to wait so long to update you that you had to be the one to ask! Tommy and Mama, now known as George and Gracie, are doing wonderfully. It's hard to believe sometimes that they've ever lived anywhere else, because they have certainly made themselves comfortable here! George is sitting with me now - he was peaceful in my lap until a minute ago, but is now lurking around the desk as if he hasn't seen it every day since his arrival! They are so hilarious when they play - still alternately loving and fighting. One day Dominic was watching them, and George was licking Gracie's face for a good 20 minutes. It was very sweet and loving - Gracie's eyes were shut, and he sort of had his front legs wrapped around her. He put one paw on her head, and then suddenly, he looked over at Dominic as if to say, 'watch this...', turned back to her and smacked her on the head! Then they chased each other for awhile. It sounded priceless.
They are eating and drinking well, and have taken very well to visitors - George is usually more outgoing - with the exception of when one of my friends who has a dog came over. In that case, Gracie was the one sniffing her very intently, while George was totally freaked out and wouldn't go near her!
The reason I haven't sent pictures, is somewhat related to them - I have a finsihed film in my camera with pictures from the first few days they were here, but one morning a few weeks ago I came downstairs to find my camera at the foot of the stairs with all of its buttons removed (and it was removed from its case??) So I need to take it in to a proper camera shop for them to get the film out, and I just haven't gotten around to it. When I do though, I'll get a CD and email you the shots of them.
Other than that, they haven't been too interested in destruction, which is nice for us - after a few unearthings of plants, I took your advice and got some of those smooth rocks to put over the soil, and that seems to be working just fine. Now that the plants are out of the question, they mostly spend their days tearing around the house or lying in their new favourite spot atop the couch cushions - that's the place with the best sun. They were big fans of running around in the bathtub, kind of like their own little skateboarding park, but we've had to put a limit on that because it was just too loud at night!
That's about all the news so far from us - I hope all else is well at the shelter - no one can believe our odyssey to get there, but it was sure worth it.

Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth was actually the first Cornish Rex to be adopted and leave our care. She won over her new family when they came from Kentucky to select a cat. Lizzy now lives on a horse farm and apparently she likes the view.
I thought you would enjoy seeing a pic of Queen Elizabeth doing what she does best, sitting in a window looking beautiful. She has grown new, thicker hair and has wiskers finally coming in. She even has hair growing on her tail where there was none before.
Thanks again for letting us adopt Lizzy (one of the MI 78). She is doing well and has fit in just fine.

Ronald
This handsome fellow was very cuddly at the shelter and was a favorite of many of the staff. He found a great home in Illinois with a single woman and no other pets.
Hi Julie - Ronald (now milo) is doing wonderfully :) He rules the roost. His new trick is to jump up onto my lap and throw his paws around my neck for a hug. He also likes to sleep under the bed covers (he taps me
on the shoulder when he is ready to get in) between my legs with his head on my lap. And he's even put on some weight - I think 10 lbs now. So all in all - I think he's very happy :) Thanks so much for letting me adopt him. He is fantastic and so much better than I could have hoped for.
Take care,
Milo and family
Victor
Victor was a handsome fellow and very playful for an older boy. He found happiness in a Pennsylvania home with another Rex cat and a dog.
Hi Julie, I promised you pictures of Victor, and here they are. He is a wonderful boy and doing very well. Has become very attached to me and my animals. Victor has checked out at the vets and is perfectly healthy now. The hair he lost on his back and tail should eventually grow back. It is amazing how friendly he is with everyone and just fits in like he's lived here since he was born. Thank you for your help in my getting this beautiful boy.

Xeda
Xeda was one of the cats that would not drink water for us. We had to do many tricks to get fluid into her. It seems she has resolved that problem in her new home. She has children, some hamsters and a dog in her new home.
Hi,
I just wanted to let you know how Xeda's doing in her new home. We absolutely adore her and she's being spoiled everyday. These are pictures showing her in front of our fireplace, her favorite spot. She's adjusted well and is loved by everyone in the house. She even has grandparents that think she's very special. She took some time to drink out of her fancy water fountain bowl, but has no problem drinking water now. Let's see...she's drank out of her bowl, the dog bowl, the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, and even the toilet. She's constantly purring and playing. She's just the best cat ever. Right now she's sitting in front of the computer screen purring so loudly I can hear her over the music. She has free reign of our house, and has even taken over some of her dog pal's favorite spots.
We did have her tested for the Bartonella disease, and were relieved when it came back negative. Our vet suggested retesting her in May just to make sure her blood levels stay the same.
Thanks again for helping us adopt Xeda and for meeting us in Madison. I can't imagine not having her in our family. We truly do love her.
Xeda and family
Xena
Xena was one of the oldest cats of the group. She was estimated to be somewhat over 10 years old. She was a very sweet, cuddly girl. Xena found a great new home in lower Michigan.
Xena is doing very well. She made the long drive without any problems. She did not use the litter box or driink during the drive. She slept most of the way. When the carrier was open, she came out, stretched and roamed the room for a couple minutes. Then she was off checking other rooms in the house most of the night. She is a curious girl and was not afraid. She spent time in each room and watched tv with us on the couch. She did not want to go to bed last night. She just wanted to be in my lap. I had to lay down next to her bed so she would go to bed.
She has used the litter box last night and this morning. She has eaten and drank water. She sure loves to cuddle and likes attention. She was on the couch with my husband a little while ago and now is on my lap while I am on the computer.
She has had no problem adjusting and has made herself at home. We are happy to have her.
Thank you for taking care of her. She is beautiful, and I don't know how anyone could not love her.
Attached are a couple pictures of Xena with us.

Zack
Zack was a loving boy who liked to give hugs. He found a great home in Minnesota with two dogs and a rabbit.
Hi, I just wanted to send you a couple of pictures and give you an update on little Zack the Cornie. He is getting along so far with one of the dogs but the other is a little more intimidating to him, so we don't yet have a "family" picture. I am sure it will work out fine and even if not, they both have their own space so it works out okay.
Zack is SUCH a LOVE! He is so sweet and loves to cuddle on my lap. I think he would sit there all day if he could! When I come home from work I usually find him snuggled under a pile of pillows and blankets, and I have to search for him underneath! He even arranges them himself to his liking and I still don't know quite how he does it. He loves his toys and his scratcher, and one of his favorite places to sit is on top of the computer monitor when my lap is not available. He likes to eat catnip out of the container but it doesn't make him act funny at all. He seems very happy, and purrs almost nonstop. He is pretty much the perfect companion-- he is the very nicest cat I have ever met. It is just so awesome to see his resilience to the situation he came from--makes you think people should follow animals' examples. He is sitting here right now "helping" me type.
We want to thank you so much for giving us this sweet boy. Hope you like the pics, and I will try to send that "family picture" if possible. Best wishes to you guys, you do an awesome job. I still check your homepage all the time to see who's gotten a home. (And thanks for all your help, Julie.)
Thanks again, and take care.
Sincerely,
Zack and family
